Obama's Brewsky Hour with Gates and Crowley

Well, that was quite the publicity stunt.

I don't think the President has any idea what the teachable moment actually was or what the consequences of his (and Gates) refusal to apologize will be going forward.

Let's review the lessons, shall we?

When you see something suspicious or are a victim of a crime, if the perpetrator isn't white, refuse to answer the 911 operator's questions about the color of their skin and hair.

It's every blackman's nightmare when he's breaking down a door or picking a lock to be accosted by a policeman and asked for identification.

When police ask for identification, refuse to give it, get caustic and accuse the incident of being racially motivated.

When the 911 caller gets frightened by the out of control abusive behavior and projects she will be a target, when the abusive man continues, police act stupidly when they arrest him.

When it turns out the policeman the President has accused of racial profiling is a false assertion, don't apologize, set up a publicity stunt on your lawn to make it look like it's all blown over - without apologizing.

Good luck with that.

After the stunt, Crowley continued to show he has the class the others so desperately desire but will never possess until they toss the chip on their shoulders weighing them down into the gutter. Crowley indicated that the "talks" would continue, the press asked whether they'd be meeting for another "beer". Crowley said he thought meeting for another "beer" would send the wrong message, perhaps they'll meet next time over Koolaid or ice tea. He's a class act.

Perhaps too, they'll invite the woman who dialed the police who has repeatedly said Gates' behavior was a justifiable offense for an arrest and affirms that arrest? She's got the piece of the puzzle that ends Gates and the President's charades.

There's a political price to pay for not admitting it's Crowley and the 911 caller who were victimized and making gentlemanly apology. I suspect the teachable moment has passed them by - crown them with dunce caps and off they'll go to an elite vacation on Martha's Vineyard. Crowley will return to patrolling the streets.

Weird and Creepy

Every year, an outbreak of flu kills over 30 thousand who are immunocompromised.

The "swine flu" turned out to be a very minor flu that only affected a handful of people who were already very sick people.

Is it me or does erecting this stage seem like they have something up their sleeves.

An outbreak of a serious strain of flu would demoralize and panic people just enough for resistance to Obama's socialize medicine to break down.

Interestingly enough - they've decided that pregnant women will get priority for the flu shot.

That's fascinating, given the status of an unborn child in this country.

Obama's "Town Hall" Meeting at AARP

How deceptive the Obama Administration is, and how the press is collaborating by deliberately omitting details that reveal his various farces, is breathtaking.

The poor suckers who attended the meeting should be spending their precious time reading the bill or finding the now many resources with citations from it that indicate they'll be assigned an end of life assistant who will review the status of their health every few years and make decisions for them.

I'm sure Obama was hoping there was enough dementia in the room for "slowing the growth of Medicare" to go right over the attendees heads.

We should be hitting up the senior centers all over America and passing out citations of the "healthcare" bill.

“I don’t want to do anything that will stop you from getting the care you need - and I won’t,’’ he said. “But you know and I know that right now we spend a lot of money in our healthcare system that doesn’t do a thing to improve people’s health.

"...doesn't do a thing to improve people's health"?

Is there anybody out there really buying into this crap?

Amazing.

Cambridge Neighbor Who Called the Police

It's about time the press picked up on the neighbor who called the police.

Stories today are making known that race was not an issue when she dialed 911, which of course, goes without saying.

Can you imagine seeing somebody try to break into a house and calling the police and then watching him go postal with the police citing their presence as a racially-motivated incident?

As you watched his rage, wouldn't you think any moment now, he's going to ask who called the police and direct his tirade towards you?

Isn't she the real target of Gates and the President's remarks?

This is the story that is being missed.

The 40-year-old woman whose emergency call to Cambridge police sparked the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and a raging national debate on race relations claims she never said “black” men were breaking into his house.

“This woman is 100 percent clear on what she said,” said attorney Wendy J. Murphy, who is representing 911 caller Lucia Whalen. “She never said she saw two black men. She said, ‘It never crossed my mind that there were two black men.’ ”

In fact, Whalen, who wants the world to know she is not a racist, isn’t even white - as had been widely reported - but has “olive-colored skin and is of Portuguese descent,” Murphy said.

This is why Gates was arrested. When Gates came out on the porch screaming like a lunatic, woman who dialed the police (who was standing there) expressed concerns to the police. When continued to wildly lash out, the arrest was made to stop him from continuing his tirade against the 911 caller.

Gates, 58, was arrested for disorderly conduct after shouting at Sgt. James Crowley, 42, who responded to the call, according to a police report. The charge was later dropped. The professor told the national media he was outraged to have been arrested in his own home, saying he was racially profiled by a “rogue” cop.

When the accusations that the cop was "rogue" became absurd, not just because of his work promoting racial harmony on the force, but there was a 911 emergency call - the allegation that the call was racially motivated then must be charged to the person who called the police.

Crowley had kind words for Whalen.

“I can’t even imagine what she must be going through,” he said. “I’ve often thought about her, and I regret . . . the undue attention on her.”...

Whalen, a Malden resident who works for the Harvard alumni magazine, has been suffering in silence for days, stung by accusations that she was a racist white woman who thought two black men at a fancy house must be burglars, Murphy said.

People are owed apologies by Gates and the President.

Of note are comments from a friend of Gates who is indignant that the police asked the 911 caller for a description of the two people breaking into the house that would include the person's color.

Have you ever heard of anything so insane?

The objective of getting a description, like the color of hair, skin, clothes - etc., is so cruisers can be on the lookout in case suspects flee.

If the answer happens to be black, it's now a racially-motivated conspiracy.

This is huge.

The President's Support and Participation in a Racially-Motivated Attack upon White People and Law Enforcement

Until Barack Obama says he's sorry and stops implying the arrest of the abusive little man proves America is racist, he's going to continue to politicaly unravel.

Obama and his administration seems to be woefully underestimating his support and personal participation of a racially motivated attack against white persons and law enforcement.

Even yesterday, after talking to Crowley by phone and emphasizing what an "outstanding police officer he is," Obama couldn't bring himself to concede the full extent of his error. He suggested both men were equally to blame, and cited "the fact that it has garnered so much attention" as proof racial issues "are still very sensitive here in America."

Baloney. The case got so much attention only because a reporter asked Obama about it on national television and he foolishly took the bait to give a long, somewhat angry answer.

Until then, the case was a mild curiosity largely because Gates, whom I know and admire, is a celebrity academic.

Obama's second mistake yesterday was insisting that weighing in is part of his "portfolio." Nonsense. Stripped of Gates' status, the case would never rise to White House comment.

In fact, there is no evidence of a racial component other than that Gates is black and Crowley is white. Not every mixed-race argument, even one involving the police, automatically qualifies as a racial incident.

Obama, by linking the case to the historically legitimate issue of police abuse of minorities, gave it a gravity it doesn't deserve. Even worse, making that linkage suggests he buys Gates' unsupported claim that Crowley's actions were racist. On what evidence?

Obama said yesterday the incident was a "teachable moment." It could be if the President sets the right example on how to clean up a mistake.

He should just admit he was wrong to get involved in the first place.

Supermarket Tabloid Trash

Yesterday's Herald had a story about John Gosselin of "John and Kate plus 8".

Gosselin has gone through the schoolteacher and has been of recent vintage smitten with the emotionally disturbed daughter of his wife's surgeon. Yesterday's Herald had a story saying Gosselin had taken up with a some tabloid journalist who was supposed to be doing a story on him over the last few days. Today there's a story that says the journalist has "fallen for him", has quit her job because she realizes the conflict of interest.

NEW YORK - A celebrity journalist who may have had a brief fling with “Jon & Kate” dad Jon Gosselin abruptly resigned her job Thursday, one day after joining him for a couples-only dinner in the Hamptons.

Kate Major, 26, a reporter for Star magazine, wrote Wednesday that she’d gone to do a story on Gosselin, “and ended up falling for him.” “I didn’t mean it to happen. It just did,” she said.

Star magazine reported Thursday that Major had resigned her job after the “conflict of interest” became apparent.

The surgeon's daughter says it's all news to her because last she knew, she and the manwhore were in love. Gosselin purportedly flew the love nest when Glassman's partying pictures were published and he started getting nervous about custody problems. She's heartbroken and distraught. Riiiggghhhhhht. What a crushing blow it must be to lose such a trusted, loyal, dedicated, ambitious friend.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

God help them all.

Catholic Health Care Demise

Judie Brown of the American Life League has a fabulous posts up about the demise of the ability of Catholic Health Care.

Judie references several disturbing situations across the nation that are worthy of your time and attention.

Most important to Boston Catholics is her reference to the current situation in the Archdiocese of Boston:

The problematic nature of such agreements, arrangements and alliances is not by any means limited to Illinois and California. It is a nationwide epidemic, rooted in the age-old dilemma of choosing between God and money. This becomes very clear when revisiting the complexities of the Boston archdiocese’s Caritas Christi mess. You may recall that American Life League was quick to commend Cardinal Sean O’Malley when the archdiocese made this announcement on June 26:

Caritas Christi Health Care, the financially challenged Catholic hospital system founded by the Archdiocese of Boston, is abruptly ending its joint venture with a Missouri-based health insurer at the insistence of Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley, who has decided that the relationship represented too much of an entanglement between Catholic hospitals and abortion providers.

But, within days, we received a telephone call informing us that the agreement had actually not been cancelled. Carol McKinley reported this on her blog, which has thus far not been refuted: “Nobody (including other bishops and cardinals) is able to get details out of the cardinal about what it is he has approved. I think our Catholic pro-life force deserves to know what the actual arrangement is.”

But we do have an inkling when we consider the statement Cardinal O’Malley made, as quoted in the Boston Globe: “By withdrawing from the joint venture and serving the poor as a provider... upholding Catholic moral teaching at all times, they are able to carry forward the critical mission of Catholic health care.’’ The newspaper’s analysis: “Because Caritas will no longer be a joint owner of the insurance venture, the archdiocese is hoping that there will no longer be any question that Caritas will not financially profit from abortions, sterilizations, or other services provided by non-Catholic hospitals.”

A Caritas spokeswoman told the Globe, “This is the right way to move the distraction of the debate of ownership and allow us to be a provider.’’ Here is noted Catholic commentator Phil Lawler’s response: “A debate over involvement in killing unborn babies is a ‘distraction’ from the business of saving lives. A debate over mutilating people to make them infertile is a ‘distraction’ from the distinctive mission of Catholic health care.”

So we are left to wonder if all this means is that Caritas Christi is no longer a an official business partner of abortion providers, but still connected with them in some way. Does it mean that Catholic hospitals will continue to refer for abortion, use the morning-after pill to treat rape victims and so forth? Nobody knows!
More revelations about the Cardinal's misconduct is coming in the next several weeks.

Boston Catholics are not letting go - so stay tuned.

Obama Can't Bring Himself to Apologize for Playing the Race Card

President Obama's arrogance is breathtaking - says he should have "calibrated comments".

A little more "calibration" is in order.

A policeman responding to a breaking and entering call from a concerned neighbor was met by a man who not only refused to produce his identification, he became combative and abusive and accused the officer's investigation of the complaint as being racially motivated.

Gates assumed that the officer approached him because he observed him. Gates was unaware that a neighbor called in the complaint and the officer was responding a 911 call. Even when this was calmly explained to Gates, his irrational and abusive behavior continued.

Everyone abusing a police officer while refusing to produce identification stands a fairly good chance of winding up in jail.

The President is refusing to apologize for calling the police department "stupid" for responding to an abusive individual with an arrest, for his conclusions that the policeman was a racist, and for making sleazy and obnoxious remarks about breaking and entering into the White House.

He in fact, still refuses to quantify a policeman's response to an abusive individual as righteous. It's news to the police and to world at large that it's every black man's nightmare to be approached a policeman while he is picking locks, breaking doors down and abusing people inside of his home.

We beg your pardon.

I'm not impressed with the invitation for a beer and I don't think the police are impressed either. What we were looking for was a statement that said I spoke without really knowing that Gates was arrested for not producing his identification and being abusive. I spoke without knowing that there every witness who observed Gates labeled his conduct as outrageous. I spoke without knowing Officer Crowley was an exemplary policeman with many years experience working to advance racial harmony and is well-respected by his fellow officers of every race and creed. I apologize to the Cambridge police for calling them stupid and I apologize for making this issue about race. That's what we are looking for.

Instead, Obama continues to twist the situation - and exaggerate by now claiming that the Officer "pulled Gates out of his house".

"I told this to Sergeant Crowley. I continue to believe that there was an overreaction in pulling professor Gates out of his home and to the station.
Obama is in deep doo-doo and has made matters worse with his arrogance. He had an opportunity to be honest and humble and garner support and respect.

Instead, we got a half-assed invitation for a brewskey and more condemnation about police arresting abusive men. One can only imagine the frightening conduct Gates executes upon people behind closed doors when cameras aren't rolling.

Obama's Catastrophic Error

I've yet to come across anyone, even in the left-leaning press, who is backing the President and Gates and their ludicrous assertions. The comments sections across the board demonstrate the President has made a catastrophic error.

Left-leaning Atlantic is reporting that the Republicans have sent a press release to the eleven Massachusetts Democrats asking if they're willing to stand by the President's comments and conduct.

Does [Rep. X] believe President Obama's comments were becoming of someone who holds the highest office in the land?" said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. "The president was slow to point out any wrongdoing in the wake of the Iranian election and his administration was quick to force through a failed stimulus plan even though they 'misread' the economy. This is certainly a questionable rush to judgment coming from a president who hasn't exactly been quick to call out unconscionable behavior by a merciless foreign dictator or gotten his facts straight before advocating a trillion-dollar mistake to address our ailing economy. Is it really presidential for him to cast harsh judgment of a law enforcement official without all the facts? These questions warrant an answer from Michael Capuano."

[Rep. X] has acted quickly and without foresight as he pushes President Obama's job-killing agenda. Now that the President has started hurling insults from the White House at local law enforcement officers, will his loyal follower continue to play along?

When you can't get Margery Egan on board your "I'm a victim" shtick, you're toast.

I have no idea what really happened to Gates last week. But his scorched-earth reaction yesterday made this heavy-hitter Harvard superstar - he of PBS, The New Yorker and the heights of power academia - seem hysterical and ridiculous, too.

Plus, exploitative, insufferable, self-absorbed and small
.

Cambridge Professor and the Race Card

I've been watching the story of the Cambridge professor who was breaking into his own house and was arrested for a few days. The professor became combative and was arrested for disorderly conduct, just like everyone else who acts like a jerk.

This appears to be a good cop who is being maligned.

But people who know Crowley were skeptical or outright dismissive of allegations of racism. A prominent defense lawyer, a neighbor of Crowley’s, his union, and fellow officers described him yesterday as a respected, and respectful, officer who performs his job well and has led his colleagues in diversity training.

“He’s evenhanded and, in the cases I’ve had with him, he’s been very much in control and very professional,’’ said Joseph W. Monahan III, a criminal defense lawyer in Cambridge and former Middlesex County prosecutor. Monahan has represented several defendants arrested by Crowley for domestic assaults and for drunken driving....

Crowley’s police union issued a statement saying it had reviewed the arrest of Gates and expressed “full and unqualified support’’ for his actions.

“Sergeant Crowley is a highly respected veteran supervisor with a distinguished record in the Cambridge Police Department,’’ said the Cambridge Police Superior Officers Association. “His actions at the scene of this matter were consistent with his training, with the informed policies and practices of the Department, and with applicable legal standards.’’

The irresponsible President has added his own measure of maligning - though he freely admits he doesn't know anything about the facts.

***UPDATE***

Gate's neighbors and fellow police officers who responded to the call, all say that Gates was abusive and out of control. There are witnesses to Gates outrageous conduct.

The reaction through the country has been outrage.

Obama is saying he is "surprised" at the reaction to his irresponsible remarks.

Really?

Let's review what he said:

“I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry;

No actually. If I made a stupid mistake and had to pick the locks of my house or car and a policeman responded to a call about somebody breaking and entering, anyone sane would be extremely grateful - a bit embarrassed but relieved that if it were a real robber, this man would have been there to stop the thief. It would be an opportunity to express your gratitude. That's how normal people react who are not basing their reactions upon the color of people's skin.

Somebody was looking at the color of somebody's skin and being abusive in the situation and every witness has thus far said the bigot is Gates.

I don't get what the President is insinuating here.

Is it bigotry calling the police if we see somebody of color breaking and entering into a home or car? Can we still call the police if the person is white or when police respond to somebody picking locks on people's houses its now something Americans are "angry" about as a matter of law across the board?

Eighteen other front-door burglaries have happened in the last two months in Gates' neighborhood. In fact, Gates' house had a front-door break-in within the last few months.

number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home;
Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct --not breaking and entering. The President seems to be twisting the facts.

Obama’s account of the incident did not precisely mirror what Gates and police have said. Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct after he forced open the jammed front door to his home, and a neighbor reported it as a break-in. Gates said the police handcuffed and booked him even though he showed his driver’s license and Harvard ID to prove that he lived in the house, but the arresting officer said the professor was loud and abusive.
In fact, details are just starting to emerge about Gates irrational and abusive behavior - including the fact that he came out of the house to continue his abusive behavior and made derogatory remarks about the policeman's mother. ( Police Report )

Obama admitted he didn't know the facts so he therefore has to admit to deliberately twisting the facts to make the judgment he made and calling the police stupid. Not very wise or prudent. It's petty and immature - not to mention sleazy and small.

The officer being attacked by Gates and Obama and wrongfully accused of being a "racist" declined today to go into the gutter with them.

Speaking at length this morning on the Dennis & Callahan show on WEEI radio in Boston, Crowley maintained that "I know what I did was right." When the hosts asserted, however, that "professor Gates and the president of the United States owe you an apology," Crowley refused to bite.

"The president has a lot of other daunting tasks ahead of him," Crowley said. "I wish for the good of the whole country that he is successful in efforts to do the many things that he has to."

The radio show hosts persisted: "Well, hopefully on those other tasks he actually gets his facts straight, because clearly he didn't know what he was talking about when he addressed your little issue."

Crowley said: "I think it is regrettable that anybody on either side of this issue would make comments -- and you know I saw some of them, but I think it's regrettable that anybody, either somebody who supports me or somebody who thinks I acted inappropriately -- without knowing the whole story, without talking to those who were there who have firsthand knowledge of the events and who saw themselves the way in which professor Gates acted and what led to his arrest."...

In an interview today with WBZ radio, Crowley said that while he "didn't vote for" Obama, he supports "the president of the United States 110 percent." But that does not mean he agreed with Obama's comment that Cambridge police "acted stupidly."

"I think he is way off base wading into a local issue before knowing all the facts," Crowley said.

This morning on WEEI, Crowley spoke for 22 minutes and offered his most detailed public explanation of why he handcuffed the renowned professor of African-American studies.

"He was arrested after following me outside the house, continuing the tirade, even after being warned multiple times, probably a few more times than the average person would have gotten," Crowley said.

The hosts asked: "How many times?

"He was cautioned in the house, meaning calm down, lower your voice," Crowley said. "Once we got outside in front of the general public and the police officers that were assembled there, two warnings, the second warning with me holding a set of handcuffs in my hand. It was something I really didn't want to do, but the professor at any point in time could have resolved the issue by quieting down and/or going back in his house."

Crowley continued, "There are so many things in this incident that keep me scratching my head wondering. I apologize, I was not aware who professor Gates was. And when I read the name off the card, it wasn't like I said, 'Oh, wow, that's professor Gates.' I'm still just amazed that somebody of his level of intelligence could stoop to such a level and berate me, accuse me of being a racist, of racial profiling, and speaking about my mother. It's just beyond words."

During the interview, the radio hosts made it clear how they felt about the arrest of Gates, telling Crowley that he did not "have to defend your character here because there is no reason to, you didn't do anything wrong."

"God knows the public is supporting you," one of the hosts said. "Maybe not the elites, maybe not the president of the United States, but the reaction on message boards, the reaction on talk shows, and just people on the street -- they are on your side, officer, you can be sure of that.

It turns out the sergeant has been teaching classes for five years at the police academy on racial profiling.

His academy class, which he teaches with a black police officer, instructs about 60 police cadets per year who spend 12 hours in the classroom, said Lowell Police Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

“He’s a very professional police officer and he’s a good role model,” Fleming said. “Former police commissioner Ronny Watson, who is a person of color, hand-picked Sgt. Crowley. ... I presume because he would be the most qualified and most professional. He’s a very good instructor. He gets very high reviews by the students.”

Watson, who is black, is the former Cambridge police commissioner

Lawrence Hickman, a black Boston police officer who also teaches at the academy, said he’s worked alongside Crowley for years now and has nothing but the highest respect for him.

“He’s well versed in the subject matter he taught,” Hickman said. “He is the right instructor for the subject material ... I’m an African-American police officer, If there were any issues or if I thought he was biased, I would have addressed that. We all do the same job and we all know how things get spun out.

The police union is saying the Obama will regret his remarks. We have a duty to make him regret his remarks.

McDonald, the lawyer for the 50-member police union, says he knows Crowley personally and considers him a topnotch officer who behaved appropriately in the Gates arrest.

He said he and members of the union "were disappointed" in Obama's remarks. "I think perhaps the president might have second thoughts about shooting from the hip."

The White House today, meanwhile, backed away slightly from President Obama's remark.

Spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters traveling on Air Force One that Obama did not regret the remark during his primetime news conference Wednesday night, but wanted to clarify that he was not calling the arresting officer stupid.

Obama felt "cooler heads on all sides should have prevailed" once the officer realized Gates was in his own home, Gibbs said, according to the Associated Press.
Obama's response to this, now that the fact are out, is beneath contempt. Obama needs to be a man, own up to his mistake and apologist. If he doesn't, this is something that he is not going to recover from. I've yet to meet anyone who isn't digusted by the President's conduct - including people who voted for him.

US President Barack Obama joked that even he would get shot if he lost his keys and tried to break into the White House.

He was answering a question about the arrest of his friend, prominent African-American Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, who was hand-cuffed and detained after having to break into his home in the Massachusetts town of Cambridge.

"I guess this is my house now. So it probably wouldn't happen," Obama said, looking around the ornate East Room and trying to put himself into a similar situation. "But let's say my old house in Chicago," he continued.

"Here, I'd get shot," he quipped, to laughs from the gathered press corps.

What a jerk.

The White House is not Barack Obama's house. That house belongs to the American people and he is our guest. I have a feeling it's going to be a short stay.

Gates needs to be fired. He's a racial profiler, a bigot, a hothead and a tiny little man. His conduct is unacceptable and we need to hold Harvard accountable.

2835 Foreclosure Petitions Filed in Massachusetts in June

Eight times higher than the number of petitions filed in June of 2008 and the worst in 13 years.

Surprise, surprise.

The 75 billion dollars of debt they wrote off for people who bought houses they couldn't afford, still can't afford them.

Obama is on a course to bankrupt the country and everyone in it to force despair and reliance upon the government for life-sustaining supplies.

Obama's Socialized Medicine - Yes We Can

Obama and Pelosi are (surprisingly) having trouble convincing Democrats that Obamacare means everybody will have the best healthcare money can buy, nobody will have to pay for it and everybody wants this. Things started to fall apart when it was leaked in the press that paying folks would not be able to hold onto their current insurance - our health plans would all be controlled by Obama.

When Obama adds fifty million more people to the healthcare system, it will cost us less money than it does now and in fact, at the breaking point, healtchcare will start "paying for itself".

That's amazing.

When they buy a new MRI machine and twenty or so million more people get referred to use it, the machine will pay for itself.

Must be another brainchild of Barney Frank's? Everyone will just stop paying for things they buy and the wizards will come up with another stimulus package to write off the debt. Nobody will remember Joe Biden's acknowledgment that they were way off on their projections in the housing fix, will they?

In any event, they've got this figured out. It's going to cost a trillion dollars in the first ten years to take on 50 million more people. Somewhere there's a pot of money being wasted.

I shouldn't say figured out. It's all conjecture - but, they'll find it, don't you worry. The medical supply companies and drug companies and doctors will forfeit their profits. Something like that.

What Congress is debating with increasing intensity, up against Obama's hope of getting both houses of Congress to pass a measure before their August recess, is how to cover this $1 trillion price tag. Opponents of the emerging plans were emboldened last week by a report from the Congressional Budget Office that showed the plans would not accomplish their stated goal of significantly reducing federal health spending. However, the plans that Congress handed Douglas Elmendorf, the head of the CBO, have yet to include some of the bolder proposals that will curb costs.

Finding any savings to pay for the reforms is bound to anger someone, which is why Congress has yet to confront all the details about where to cut. "Waste is income for other people," says Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington. "When you find the waste -- and there's much, clearly -- that's all income for someone, whether it's the drug companies, the medical supply industry, doctors who might be paid too much for some procedures. Every single one has someone behind it who will fight to their last breath to keep Congress from taking them away."

Educated people know where they'll find "waste". Like every other reformation of healthcare in every other country, "waste" is rationing health care. Your mother has stage III cancer - they're not going to waste resources to treat her - at 62, she could be a goner. Your baby is born at 34 weeks and needs neonatal care? Sorry, not wasting resources.

Obama Administration officials are saying it in every way there is to say it and the mainstream media is not paying attention.

In his speech to the American Medical Association, President Obama said what White House health advisor Ezekiel Emanuel and Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag have said in print some time ago. The only way to control health care costs is to get doctors to provide less care — fewer tests, fewer procedures, fewer everything. Of course, the Administration wants to eliminate only that care that is "unnecessary.

Clearly the Administration does not consider doctors the best judge of what people need. The obvious end game: Washington will tell doctors how to practice medicine....

If health care is to be rationed, what's the right way to do it? Zeke Emanuel (who is also the brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel) wrote an entire article on this subject in the Lancet on January 31, 2009. Emanuel advocated allocating health resources in order to maximize collective life years. Suppose a 25-year-old and a 65-year-old have a life threatening disease. Since the 25-year-old has many more potential years of life ahead of him, he should receive preferential treatment, says Emanuel. He justifies denying care to elderly patients in the following way:

The complete lives system discriminates against older people…. Unlike allocation by sex or race, allocation by age is not invidious discrimination; every person lives through different life stages rather than being a single age. Even if 25-year-olds receive priority over 65-year-olds, everyone who is 65 years now was previously 25 years.

There's more. In a different article written more than 10 years ago for the Hastings Center Report, Emanuel said health services should not be guaranteed to "individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens." He continues, "An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia."

After an internal squabble that fractured the American Medical Association, doctors have started to publicly mobilize against it.

Some doctors charge the bill will lead to inferior patient care as physician offices around the country triple their patient lists and become forced to ration care.

"This is war," Dr. George Watson, a Kansas physician and president-elect of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, told FOXNews.com Thursday. "This is a bureaucratic boondoggle to grab control of health care. Everything that has been proposed in the 1,018 page bill will contribute to the ruination of medicine."

Abortion is starting to be a tar baby for advancing socialized medicine.

...another group of Democrats and Republicans held a news conference Wednesday to call for an explicit ban on funding.

In a Tuesday night interview, President Barack Obama claimed he does not want abortion funding in the final health care bill Congress may send him. The issues of taxpayer-funding of abortions and mandates on abortion coverage are unifying pro-life groups in a massive effort to amend or halt the legislation.

They're not ruling it out, they're not ruling it in, they think medical doctors should determine it - but the President doesn't want abortions covered. Noooooo. So if abortion shows up in the package, just remember that it wasn't Obama's idea, somebody else made THAT decision.

For those who enjoy intellectual dishonesty, there's a good debunking of Obama's magical and free healthcare here, written by Bobby Jindal along with some common sense guidelines and principles in a reformation.

Should be an interesting few weeks as the push goes on before summer recess. If we don't pass his healthcare reform package, it will be Helter Skelter.

Give us a break.

Fr. Fessio Gets Another Shoe in His Fanny From Ave Maria

The idea that Catholics are banished if they raise a concern or grievance about an apostolate we care about is a concept I just don't take a shine to.

He said that the reason for my dismissal stemmed from a conversation I had
in November of 2008 with Jack Donahue, then chairman of the board of AMU. At
that time I felt it an obligation to speak to the board chairman before the
upcoming board meeting, to make sure he was aware of the urgency of the
university’s financial situation. After I had informed him, using
projections based on publicly available documents and statements, he asked
me what I thought was the solution. I told him that there were policies
being followed that were at the root of the problem, that the present
administration was irrevocably wedded to those policies, and that without a
change of administration the university was at great risk.

Dr. Sites said that Jack Donahue related this conversation to Tom Monaghan,
and it was decided (I don’t know specifically by whom) that the university
could not have a faculty member making these criticisms of the
administration and thus undermining the university.

Dr. Sites told me that there were unspecified others who had similar
substantive concerns that I was undermining the university.

I continue to support the university. I pray for its success. I have great
admiration for the faculty, students, and many of the staff. I do disagree
with some of the policies of the administration. This seems to be the reason
I was fired the first time, in March 2007, since the official explanation
was "irreconcilable administrative differences".

Nevertheless, I think it is an accurate summary to say that I am being
dismissed as a faculty member because of a private conversation with the
chairman of the board in which I made known my criticisms of the university
administration; and because of allegations which have not been made known to
me and to which I have not been given an opportunity to respond.

I will continue to recommend AMU to students and parents. And I will
continue to think my dismissal is another mistake in a long series of unwise
decisions.
The comments at Fr. Z's do not bode well for Ave Maria - almost unanimously. There's several links in the comments section to Ave Maria Watch which appears to be a site that chronicles concerns about the project. Here's a post about concerns about solvency.

Apparently there was a controversy in February regarding the vaporizing of Vic Melfa at Ave Maria.

In February, former Ave Maria University board member Vic Melfa warned that the university’s reliance on the town’s real estate venture and Monaghan’s donation puts Ave Maria “in a more precarious position than most other schools.”

Melfa, a Massachusetts entrepreneur, left the university’s board meeting in February amid questions about whether he resigned or had been removed. He later said he had resigned.

The timing of the firing was planned when school was not in session so that students, faculty and concerned Catholics wouldn't be able to mobilize around the hornet's nest.

Fessio was due back at the university next week to help teach a session to high school students, he said.

He attributed the timing of his firing, during the summer and in between academic years, to university leaders wanting to avoid a repeat of the protests that ensued after his first firing in March 2007.

Rational mature people are able to understand that a conflict can arise between faculty and administration but they're going to oppose a stampede to silence criticisms over liturgies that are problematic. They're going to oppose firing somebody because they raised concerns about finances in a private conversation. Timing this to avoid answering questions and legitimate concerns is dubious.

Fessio was never given a reason for that decision other than “irreconcilable administrative differences,” which he paraphrased from a March 2007 press release.

In an interview with the Daily News a year after his demotion, Fessio said his relationship with AMU President Nick Healy wasn’t tense but he acknowledged liturgical differences of opinion.

More critical comments and questions here and very disturbing observations here.

One of the major problems, in so far as I can see, is that those who were attracted to the University because they assumed it would be traditional Catholic (and therefore without the "speaking in tongues" and liturgical antics that go with it were duped. There was a bait and switch. In the end, the cults and ego rose to the helm of the ship.

What a shame.

Put the Tabernacle Back Where It Belongs

Bishop John M. D’Arcy of Fort Wayne-South Bend has issued a directive in his diocese to put the tabernacle back where it belongs by August 4, 2009.

Saying tabernacle placement has become “a source of controversy,” he said the Eucharist should always be “a means of unity and communion, and never of division.”

“The place of the tabernacle in our church should reflect our faith in the real presence of Christ, and should always be guided by church documents,” Bishop D’Arcy continued.

In his experience, people have always desired the tabernacle to be “central and visible” and find it “confusing” when it is not.

The norms state that the tabernacle should be “prominently located in the sanctuary of the church, along the central axis behind the main altar ... at an elevated, open location in the apse area, or in another central place in the sanctuary that is equally conspicuous.”

If a high altar with a tabernacle remains in place, the norms add, “it is appropriate to continue using this noble structure for the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament.”

The norms are to applied to all future construction or restoration projects, and in churches where the tabernacle is not centrally located a consultation should begin to determine how to do so.

When priests in Boston started literally pushing Christ off to "side Altars", it won't surprise anyone to know I started to ask questions (and track down the wizard who came up with this harebrained scheme) that were never answered to my (or anyone's) satisfaction.

They said when priests were performing the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, they were watching where people were looking and they all noticed that people's eyes were looking at the Tabernacle behind them.

"And you believe that rubbish?", I'd ask, "the Tabernacle is directly behind the priest. You'd have to be superhuman to measure the tiniest fraction of a gaze. What kind of priests take inventory of where people's eyes are when they're supposed to be entering Golgatha and literally sacrificing himself at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? By any chance were they wearing rubber noses and circus hats? "

"Nobody that adores the Eucharist is going to get up out of bed on their day off, go to Church and then not pray the Canon, enter into Golgatha themselves, lift their prayers and petitions up with the Sacrifice "

Then they'd say it was because all the people stampeding in to pray while Mass was going on needed a place to flock undistracted.

Those conversations typically went like this:

"That's amazing", I'd say. "This I've got to see. What time do they come?"

"Well, not here"

"Where then? At what parishes is this happen in? I want to witness these miraculous pilgrimages."

"At Cathedrals and Shrines, when tourists come"

"You mean, like St. Patrick's in New York or the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in D.C.?"

"Yeah"

"They've got that covered. There are multiple Sanctuaries in Cathedrals. The people coming to pray who don't want to pray in a Mass, go to a Chapel or side Altar or Sanctuaries downstairs or upstairs."

"That's true"

"Are buses of tourists being diverted from some Cathedral that has this flaw that you're trying to accommodate here?"

...silence....

It's the devil. You want to fall for his nonsense, don't let these facts stand in your way. Just don't spit on us and tell us it's raining. We're not as stupid as we look.

Kudos to Bishop D'Arcy.

Woe to the shepherds
who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture,
says the LORD.
Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel,
against the shepherds who shepherd my people:
You have scattered my sheep and driven them away.
You have not cared for them,
but I will take care to punish your evil deeds.
I myself will gather the remnant of my flock
from all the lands to which I have driven them
and bring them back to their meadow;
there they shall increase and multiply.
I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them
so that they need no longer fear and tremble;
and none shall be missing, says the LORD.

Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David;
as king he shall reign and govern wisely,
he shall do what is just and right in the land.
In his days Judah shall be saved,
Israel shall dwell in security.
This is the name they give him:
"The LORD our justice."

"Innocent Bystanders" is Paradoxical

A local 15 year old has written an anti-bullying book called "Dorrie Witt's Guide to Surviving Bullies"

But Brigitte - like every other kid - more often has been a witness to bullying than a victim. And she believes there’s no such thing as an innocent bystander: If you’re a spectator, you’re a participant. Still, she knows that helping out is easier said than done.

“I think it’s very hard to be a bystander, because when you’re watching a bully, you’re not sure how or when to intervene. I think people are scared to intervene,’’ says Brigitte, who lives in Dover. “All it takes is one voice and maybe someone else will join in to stop it. I think there’s power in numbers. Bullies don’t like to be put on the spot.’’

Girlfriend, you've got that right.

Bullies are given empowerment in all different kinds of ways. Sitting by and doing nothing is the lowest form - enabling.

One of my pet projects is unleashing weapons of destruction at the bullies inside of the Catholic Church.

Another form of empowerment - and perhaps are more self-centered (and therefore tougher one to endure) is co-dependency.

As faithful Catholics increasingly turn to the internet for the spiritual enlightenment lacking down at their local parishes, there's a new form of co-dependency that is fascinating to watch.

There's a decent example of this co-dependecy here, manifesting itself during the recent outings of the byproducts of corruption at the Archdiocese of Boston under Cardinal O'Malley's watch.

I'll fisk it in more detail later - but, in general, this is how it plays out on the internet. An orthodox site develops. The bullies carry on and on in the comments section attacking commenters. The administrators let them. You let them bully you whilst appeal to them in a rational manner. They continue bullying. The administrators let them. The digits on the comments go up. After it's clear rational and sane thoughts can't penetrate their mind - they're just bullies who are most likely also victimizing at their parish and inside of their homes and places of work, you give them a kick in their pants. The Administrators finally step in. The bullies whine. They drivel on about their hurt feelings and how mean you are. To everyone's amazement, the administrators admonish the victims. (At one site, they've unwittingly banned quite a bit of prominent Catholic leaders while carry on with the bullies.
After two years, the orthodox have moseyed on over to Fr. Z's blog, their commenters are now 90% dissident Catholics and they can't get any momentum going, they're linking to the National Catholic Reporter and Commonweal and they've won the respect of pervert and killing enablers like the dissident Henry Karlson. Whistleblowers getting in their way with substantive complaints about the salacious crimes against children in their diocese are thugs talking about their "princes of the church", etc.)

This kind of enabling goes on at Catholic websites to drive up the numbers in their comboxes - which, of course, it does at the outset. As we all know in our parishes when bullying dissenters show up at a ministry, the orthodox complete their baptismal call and defend the truth until it's clear the person in control (the priest usually) either doesn't have the spinal fortitude, has some selfish motive (usually money) or is on the other side of truth and it's time to dust our sandals. The orthodox have to learn how to push back in our apostolates and parishes because bullies just take on new victims. Unsuspecting people, Catholics who aer not seasoned in the the defense of the faith sometimes get traumatized. When logic fails with our we've got to control with money. We've got to appeal to the Legatus and Knights of Malta people to withhold donations. We've got to re-group, pick out a few territories and advance.

As I said above, I'll fisk the behaviors of the bullies in more detail later. I hate plunging into vomit in the middle of my day. Enjoy your Saturday!

The Pope's Vacation Starts Off On the Wrong Foot

Pope Benedict XVI Slips in tub and fractured his wrist.

My kind of Catholic: Nothing stops us from eating and the Sacraments.

The Vatican reports that the Pope ate breakfast and celebrated mass before he went to hospital. At hospital he had minor surgery to treat a slight fracture of his wrist. The Pope was lightly sedated for the procedure.

(You don't suppose the geniuses haven't yet installed railings in the Pope's residences, do you?)

Voice of the Faithful Cost Savings Announcement

As our tipster in the comboxes points out, Catholic Key Blog has a follow-up post on Voice of the Faithful circulation clarifying their fire sale fundraising.

Some people ask: What could you possibly need $30,000 a month for?

To which I respond: How can we possibly run a nationwide and worldwide movement to transform a well-funded, entrenched 2000-year-old institution with any less?

There is new evidence this month of the need for the Catholic laity to speak up and speak out about our Church. Two recent developments underscore that need:

* Experiencing the same trauma that U.S. Catholics suffered when the clergy sex abuse scandal was exposed in the U.S. in 2002, Catholics in Ireland are now realizing how much has been hidden away from their sight in parishes, schools and orphanages throughout that country; and

* The Vatican has recently launched two investigations in the U.S., not to further understand the sexual abuses by clergy, but to identify American nuns who do not have sufficient “fidelity” to the Vatican.
Permit me, if you will, to make a half-million dollar per year cost-saving announcement:

We know what's sick in the Catholic Church. When it comes to the safety of children in the Catholic Church, it's not the clergy we have to worry about. It's the batpoop crazy laity. These are the same people who were in control of everything on earth now on the brink of global collapse.

This group of wizards, now wanting to fix things customarily could index seven or eight things they do in every parish. They run the music ministry, they're "Eucharistic Ministers", lectors, pastoral councils and they're a CCD teacher, RCIA and finance committees. The only places you don't find them is in Adoration, the Rosary prayer group and the Confession line. When people had a complaint about corruption, they harassed whistleblowers. They are the culture they're trying to fix.

Parents should no more get involved with anything any of these whackadoos operate or entrust their sweet children and teenagers to them than they would the carnival people at the Brockton Fair. Set up neighborhood watch programs and send out an amber alert when you see these crazy people in your neighborhood. Tether your children with ropes tied to your waist.

These people want Catholics to send them money so they can go over and "help" the Irish?

Saints preserve us.

That's like when Castro opened up the prisons and gave them all free boats, a compass and maps to Florida.

Heavens no, we can't do that. It would be cruelty.

ouch

Jackson's hair on fire.

First Trip to City Point in 2009

People use blogs for all kinds of things. Some are personal journals. Some are for the Gipper. Some are a little of both. I don't usually have the time to post personal stuff on my blog. But, tonight - to heck with what's going on in the world. Blah. Blah. I want to post about City Point.

I had some personal things happening after work that were in town and so I drove into work today. On my way home, I decided to swing by Castle Island. Usually, I'm there once a week, as soon as it opens in March. Stinky weather on weekends and a busy schedule, I can't believe that tonight was the first time I was able to get there in the 2009 season.

For out of towners, City Point/Castle Island is the location of a fort that has guarded Boston harbor for centuries. There's actually only one entrance into Boston Harbor and our forefathers erected a fort for centuries of centurions (Fort Independence). Irish immigrants would flock to City Point almost every evening from all over Boston. It's the one place to catch a breeze no matter how hot and muggy it is and the view (and salt air) is to die for. There's a small take-out joint (Sullivan's) that serves the best grilled food (and ice cream) in the City (and at reasonable prices).

I grabbed a hot dog and ice cream and sat in one of my usual places overlooking Logan airport and the fishing pier - at the corner of the fort under the American flag. I love the sound of the flag clapping above me in the wind knowing it's waving o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave for hundreds of years.

As far back as I can remember, I have memories of being at City Point with my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and my own children - and of course friends I grew up with in the City. I love the place not just for the beauty and history but for the memories I've made there in my life. It's one of those places where the I can feel the animus of all those people. People I loved, who have since died. One of those places where, all at the same time, you feel warmth, comfort and sadness because you miss the people.

Making memories with people, we leave a piece of it behind in those places forever, don't we?

Don't flit away a precious moment of this life.

It's too short.
It's too beautiful.

This is a youtube of another one of my favorite songs

These are days you'll remember.
Never before and never since, I promise,
will the whole world be warm as this.
And as you feel it, you'll know
it's true
that you
are blessed and lucky.
It's true
that you are
touched by something
that will grow and bloom
in you.

These are days you'll remember.
When May is rushing over you
with desire
to be part of the miracles you see
in every hour.
You'll know
it's true
that you are blessed and lucky.
It's true
that you
are touched by something
that will grow and bloom in you.

These are days.

These are the days you might fill with laughter until you break.
These days you might feel a shaft of light make its way across your face.
And when you do
then you'll know how it was meant to be.
See the signs and know their meaning.
It's true,
then you'll know how it was meant to be.
Hear the signs and know they're speaking to you,
to you.

What Did the Democrats Know About Eric McFadden

Tom Blumer has a post up about Democratic sexual psychopath Eric McFadden that questions why Ohio newspapers are not reporting on McFadden's years of deviant sexual obsessions in their recent stories about McFadden's guilty plea.

McFadden had thousands of posts on one website that are pathological, creepy and demonstrate a sexually sick and twisted individual. In addition to usasexguide website, he was posting on other third party hooker review sites, Craig's List and he had at least one, if not two hooker review websites of his own.

Some of the posts indicate they were doing during work days and work hours that McFadden would have been present inside of Strickland's offices while under Strickland's employ.

His conduct is obsessive and twisted, very much the kind of creepy obsessive dynamic I was reporting to Strickland's Office of General Counsel.

Here's a citation from an old post:

I'm going to post a few soundbytes to show just how creepy this guy was.

Sounds like some of them were ducking him. There's one post that he says he has to take one of the woman's shoes or purse so she won't ditch him? I'm trying to redact the sex talk but I hope I don't miss some of the lingo. Please let me know if I do and I'll redact it.

1. Best looking SW - Earlier this year I met _____ around Broad and Centeral - Killer body - saw her a couple other times, then she went down hill fast. Got nasty real fast. There were a couple others I met this past year that were just down right hot, but never saw them again. Possibly one timers or passing through.

2. Best Body - For me right now - this nice ________ on the hilltop. ______ is a close second

3. Best **** talent - _______ - I know she is new, well at least to me --- but damn this girl has skills.

4. Best Attitude - Giving the prize to the new girl again.

5. Worst Looking - I don't stop for em, so I don't get to know their names.

6. Worst Attitude - If they display a bad attitude - out the door they go.

Worst Attitude change to better- don't mess with attitude

Best Attitude change to worst- Don't hang with em for that change

Best Looking to bad- I agree with ________ on ______ - I simply pass her by now. - but the ______ I am refering to is a faster and worse dive. ________ on the west side took a nose dive as well. Oh yeah - I think _________ in the short north went south quick as well.

Worst ** to Best- if they are that bad - I ususally forget their name and don't give em a second chance

*

Ran around the west side for a bit early evening yesterday. Saw some regular skanks. Did not meet anybody I was interested in. ________number now goes straight to voice mail. Oh well. I did see 3 SW's on the wall near the Clark Station on Broad in the Hilltop. One was a blonde, older - total skank. The other was a pudgy platium blonde - not attractive at all, and the third was a thin brunette who actually look cute from afar (they all do) Upon closer inspection, I found out her name was ______ - but her teeth were not so great looking....

As for hours - I have found the best lately and the times I have actually met and had a good time is early morning - 5:30am to about 8am.

Stay safe
*

The storms woke me up this morning - so I went out for an early morning drive. First I met _____ - I had digits for her from a Sr Member, but they had not been working. She is early 30s. Pretty face. Great service. Have new digits for her for Sr. Members only. Met her on Sully in bottoms.

It had been awhile since I had a ***************, and _______ did do a great job, but I was still in need of some more ********. So after I dropped her off, I cruised around a bit. I met ______. I reported on her a while back. A very nice person and great attitude. Kind of cute in a very ******* sort of way. She was very clean today and had put on some weight. Said she just got out. She provided outstanding service for the second of the day. Sadly - no digits for Pam. Met her on Broad in the bottoms....

I did pull up on one on sully in the hilltop - that was kind of cute - then she opened her mouth and she had like one tooth! Sorry - Told her I thought she was someone I knew and rolled on.
*

Also ____ makes good points below about not fronting funds for the "__________". You have to think, if she comes out and actually does get in your car - what she will bring with her. Now if you really must take the chance and it is a girl you know and "trust", still cover your butt. Make her leave something of value to her in your car. Like her purse, if she has one or her shoes. If she won't do that. Forget it. Also don't sit there and wait - drive around the block and come back in 10 or so. If you really want to see this girl, the promise of more funds and holding something value will most likely make her reappear. I don't suggest this for the monger new to the scence. Know what you are doing before doing something risky. In the case of _________, holding the purse and shoes did the trick, and even though the service was crappy...
*

Two Fer

Out Saturday night - met ____ by ________ on Broad. Short hair brunette. Great skills. This girl is always clean and showered with clean clothes.

Then saw _______at Westpark and Sully. She was cleaned up today as well and tells me that she is not pregnant as she thought.

Some of the date and time stamps below that accompanied McFadden's sex posts included regular word days and times while McFadden should have been inside of Strickland's offices using their equipment:

08-16-07, 09:46
08-11-07, 09:22
08-04-07, 15:07

One of the questions I certainly relates to McFadden's arrest in April of 2006 relating to a kidnapping and telecommunications harassment charge. (info from the police report in this post).

After I suggested to Strickland's attorneys that they go to McFadden's computer and do some investigating of their own to sniff out his internet traffic and find out where he was posting (thinking at that time that they would lead to political enemies McFadden was stalking in perverted and creepy ways), McFadden was gone within a day or two from Strickland's Office.

With respect to the kidnapping charge - did Strickland's office run a CORI before they hired McFadden?

There are two kinds of CORI's. One kind is a public access to CORI and the other is a criminal access to arrest records. Without a doubt, when Clinton hired McFadden (after he was supposedly let go for lacking leadership skills for faith-based initiatives in Strickland's Office!)being a candidate for President, a full criminal CORI was definetly done and this must have been on his records.

I want to know what was found at Strickland's Office on McFadden's computer after my complaint. I also want to know what they told Clinton about McFadden's extracurricular internet activities. If they didn't reveal McFadden's history, there is some pretty serious negligence on the part of Strickland's staff. If they did reveal it to Clinton and she hired McFadden anyway - with a kidnapping charge and telecommunications harassment charge, a complaint that garnered enough concern to conduct their own investigation and fire McFadden - that is information that I think the public would be interested in knowing.

What makes it very important, is that Clinton used McFadden's services in conjunction with Catholics United/ Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good) to conduct intimidation inside of parishes (reported here)

Alexia Kelley of Catholics In Alliance for the Common Good - rewarded by the Obama Administration with an appointment, I also personally contacted prior to McFadden's hire at Strickland's Office -- so she was very aware of McFadden's conduct when she deployed it in parking lots to intimidate Catholics in the 2008 election.

A date with the Ohio Inspector General is on my radar.

Breaking the Code of Silence

Former Legionaries priest Fr. Berg breaks the code of silence.

Q: What would be your suggestions to the five visitors?

A: I will limit myself to one overall suggestion: help the Legionaries to engage in an honest and objective self-critique. What I have found most unsettling of late is the kind of group-think that has settled in among the Legionaries: "We really don't think there is anything wrong with the internal culture of the Legion, but if the Holy See tells us to change things, we will." The docility to the Holy See, though laudable and correct, masks a huge internal flaw: the Legion's corporate inability to engage in a healthy self-critique. This is no time for a business as usual approach, but that has been the impression one generally gets from the Legionaries over the past five months of the crisis.

That inability to see and honestly recognize the flaws and errors that so many people outside the Legion are able to see speaks volumes. The Legionaries should be reminded that it is not the task of the Holy See to reform the Legion. The Legion will only be genuinely reformed when it reforms itself from within. But that can only begin with a self-examination that arises from within the Legion and owns up to the Legion's errors.

The unhealthiness of the code of silence, the cancer is a metastatic condition from the lowest level of the pews to the highest levels at Vatican.

Q: What are the issues you think should change in the internal culture of the Legion, especially related to the recently suppressed "vow of charity", meaning the vow not to criticize one's superiors?

A: At the core of serious problems in the internal culture of the congregation is a mistaken understanding and living of the theological principle - in itself valid - that God's will is made manifest to the religious through his superior. The Legionary seminarian is erroneously led to foster a hyper-focusing on internal "dependence" on the superior for virtually every one of his intentional acts (either explicitly or in virtue of some norm or permission received, or presumed or habitual permissions). This is not in harmony with the tradition of religious life in the Church, nor is it theologically or psychologically sound. It entails rather an unhealthy suppression of personal freedom (which is a far cry from the reasoned, discerned and freely exercised oblation of mind and will that the Holy Spirit genuinely inspires in the institution of religious obedience) and occasions unholy and unhealthy restrictions on personal conscience.

Furthermore, Legionary norms regarding "reporting to," "informing," "communication with," and "dependence on" superiors constitute a system of control and conformity which now must be considered highly suspect given what we know about Fr. Maciel. They furthermore engender a simplistic, and humanly and theologically impoverished notion of God's will (its discernment and manifestation) that breeds personal immaturity.

More seriously, the lived manner in which Legionaries practice obedience is laced with the kind of unquestioning submission which allowed the cult of personality to emerge around the figure of Maciel in the first place and covered for his misdeeds. Legionary seminarians are essentially trained to suspend reason in their obedience and to seek a total internal conformity with all the norms, and to withstand any internal impulse to examine or critique the norms or the indications of superiors.

Steve Skojec gives pretty disturbing witness to the particularly disturbing dynamics at play in the Legion

This cannot be emphasized enough. What I saw when I was on the inside was not just the fostering of dependence on superiors and spiritual directors, but a fostering of co-dependence. This leads to a deformation of conscience and will that all but completely strips individuals within the system of their ability to make independent, conscientious decisions.

Which is why, in my opinion, there are a number of Legionary seminarians - and even priests - who do not now, nor have ever had, a priestly vocation. I didn't have one, but that didn't stop superiors I loved and respected from telling me that they "knew" I had one. That kind of certitude in a system where the priests calling the shots are telling you "God's will" can be an insurmountable obstacle to young men (or women) discerning whether they are called to the religious life. And the Legionaries' frequent insistence that even those signs that would ordinarily be considered evidence of a different vocation (say, a strong desire for the married life) are nothing but further indications of God's call to ecclesiastical vows often seals the deal.

I spent many years trying to overcome the guilt I felt about following my heart instead of my superiors' and spiritual directors' wishes that I become a Legionary. Intense, gut-wrenching, faith-damaging guilt. And I was only in their clutches for a relatively short time.

Try to keep a stiff upper lip: Voice of the Faithful has Finally Dried Up

Trying to contain glee, the Catholic Key Blog put up an urgent message he received from VOTF today.

With great heaviness of heart, we write to inform you that VOTF is at the crossroads of financial survival and we need your immediate help in order to keep it going.

During the past two years, the Board of Trustees approved substantial reductions in VOTF's operating budget as decreases in revenue reflected the emerging and now full economic downturn in our country. Between FY 08 and 09, the Board approved a budget reduction of over 30%. As the economy and our revenue stream worsened appreciably, in April 2009, the Board reduced the FY 09 budget by another 35% (nearly $235,000 more). To accomplish this huge drop, the Board made painful cuts in staff salaries and contractor support; relocated the office to a smaller facility at about half the monthly rental costs; and curtailed costly mailings intended to raise revenue. Throughout this period, staff, contractors and volunteers demonstrated remarkable resolve in doing even more with less.

At the same time, the Board continued an aggressive outreach to members, friends, and donors to raise more revenue, as you are no doubt painfully aware from a variety of appeals and fund-raisers communicated in emails and editions of In The Vineyard.

Cash reserves allowed VOTF to continue operations but only by a very thin margin. The Board's plan was to generate a substantial infusion of revenue when the Officers rolled out a comprehensive Strategic Plan in early August. Based on the enthusiastic response from dozens of VOTF members who have been bringing the Strategic Plan to life for several months, we expected that it would result in a revitalization of members' energy at regional and local levels, and with it, a level of necessary revenue as members and donors recognized the opportunity for a renewed voice and influence in achieving VOTF's mission and goals. Previews of the Strategic Plan have been included in several recent editions of In The Vineyard.

Unfortunately, our financial condition has deteriorated before the rollout the Strategic Plan. As of early July, VOTF's reserves have all but been depleted, and it faces the prospects of not being able to pay for recurring costs during July and beyond. After meeting in an emergency session on July 9, the Board foresaw two realistic options: (1) declare that VOTF could not continue to operate and begin to wind it down, or (2) appeal to members to fund operations in the short term and seek sustained funding based on an anticipated enthusiastic response to the Strategic Plan. If the latter is successful, the Board will develop a downsizing plan commensurate with sustained funding expectations, supplemented where feasible with additional volunteer help. . .

They have to shelve the 2009 annual priest of integrity award to Fr. Cutie and close up shop. Boston Chancery employees are despondent. First Michael Jackson and now this.

Subject: Followup on Caritas Contract

Dear Anne,

After a little respite to re-energize the troops, I'm writing to follow-up on the Caritas situation and to see if we can get a response from you regarding your assertions that the Cardinal did the right thing and you always knew he would do the right thing.

I'm about to start round 2 - and before I do, I'm asking for some respectful feedback on what you think it is he actually did.

Right now, John Q Public believes the Cardinal withdrew from the contract with the Commonwealth to refer women seeking abortions to CeltiCare.

However, that doesn't appear to be what he did at all, does it?

Caritas signed a contract that gave assurances that they would either provide family planning and other services or contract with people to provide them and compel Catholic workers at Caritas to refer them to CelitCare. Caritas appointed NARAL to oversee compliance, if necessary, inside of examination rooms.

The fact that the Cardinal approved the creation of CeltiCare to carry out the abortions is the primary ehtical flaw for a variety of reasons that have already been discussed and don't need to be reiterated in this email. The secondary flaw of taking a 51% interest in the new abortion business and then reducing it to a 49% interest - was certainly the most eggregious exploitation of the poor, Catholic teaching and ethics, but, it is SECONDARY.

The current situation, on its face, appears to be that the Cardinal and the National Catholic Bioethics Center came to an agreement to go forward with all the contracts they made with the abortionists, Celticare and the Commonwealth - but somehow, without an ownership interest in Celticare.

Has the Cardinal provided to you information that confirms your convictions that he has done the "right thing"?

Nobody (including other Bishops and Cardinals) are able to get details out of the Cardinal about what it is he has approved. I think our Catholic prolife force deserves to know what the actual arrangement is. If the Cardinal has created more subterfuge, as I & others suspect he has, once again - I believe these kinds of falsehoods indicate an intentional dishonesty that makes the environment for children here in the diocese, an unsafe one. People who create subterfuge to cover up crimes and misdemeanors against children (killing them being the worst of crimes) is something we must oppose in unison in the public square. And, we must use all of the resources we have here in the United States and in Rome to correct. This is our duty.

The Cardinal has got to release the details of all the contracts and, he must release the "opinion" of the NCBC on the CURRENT arrangment.

I, personally, would like to know what you know. I know many others in our prolife trenches also want to know what information you have that gives you the confidence that the Cardinal has done "the right thing".

If you know nothing, if you have sought the information from the Cardinal and he has obsfucated (as he has with the rest of us), then it is your duty to release a public statement and inform Catholics in the Commonwealth of the situation.

We have tried informally to get the contracts from the Commonwealth. Pages are missing (including signature pages), references are made to corporations as the parties bound to the contract that do not exist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Something stinks to high heavens.

The Cardinal tried to get Catholic periodicals to put out an "interview" with him that was carefully written that didn't answer any of the questions we have or reveal any of the details of the current contracts and arrangements. We vehemently opposed it and will continue to oppose it because we want our questions answered. The reason we want our questions answeredis because this has the potential to wipe out Catholic right to practice medicine without violating their faith and exploiting and doing harm to the souls who come across the thresholds our Catholic healthcare facilities.

We've got to ramp up public efforts to get this deal out into the open so that other diocese can be on their toes and reject it when it comes their way. The Cardinal has blown smoke up into their faces to confuse.

Anne, you can't be out there in the public square or under the radar working against us. We'd like to have some unity in our grassroots network. The Cardinal used MCFL as a tool to stall convictions of the people, give false hope and misinformation (as I believe he used the NCBC). I'm asking you not to let him do that again, in round 2.

Are you with us or against us?

Sexual Abuse Hysteria

Two children finally recant after putting their father in jail 20 years ago.

Matthew, now 33, was 9 years old at the time. He told a judge he made the allegation after months of insistent questioning by now-retired Clark County sheriff’s detective Sharon Krause just so she would leave him alone.

Tetz, 30, said she doesn’t remember what she told Krause back in 1985, but she remembers Krause buying her ice cream. She said that when she finally read the police reports she was "absolutely sure" the abuse never happened.

"I would have remembered something that graphic, that violent," Tetz said.

Spencer’s sentence was commuted by then-Gov. Gary Locke in 2004 after questions arose about his conviction. Among other problems, prosecutors withheld medical exams that showed no evidence of abuse, even though Krause claimed the abuse was repeated and violent.

Krause declined an interview request from The Columbian in 2005 and could not be reached Friday, the newspaper reported...

Both children said that while growing up in California they were told by their mother, who divorced Spencer before he was charged, that they were blocking out the memory of the abuse.

They said they realized as adults the abuse never happened, and they came forward because it was the right thing to do.

Repressed memories are nonsense.

Children can remember fires they are injured in that resulted in deaths of other family members, they can remember violent car accidents, etc.

Repressed memories are drummed up accusations when they're looking for money, retribution, control, drama and attention.
